Provincial News: Ontario Chamber of Commerce pleased that WSIB is ahead of schedule to eliminate unfunded liability

In November 2015, the WSIB announced that it’s on track to eliminate the unfunded liability (‘UFL’) by 2022 – five years ahead of a legislated timetable to reach financial sustainability. The elimination of the UFL will eventually result in lower premiums paid by employers who fund the system.

Personal injury professionals have expressed much consternation of late about the drastic changes to the Insurance Act and the statutory accident benefits schedule. Paralegals, who for years have derived a nice living from accident-benefits work, are expressing worry about their livelihoods, as are the clinic owners, chiropractors, assessment companies, and, of course, the tort lawyers who all line up to take a piece of the personal injury pie.

Canadian drivers worried by usage based auto insurance

Current usage based models in Canada use telematics machines to show in general how much a vehicle is used, under what driving conditions, and how it is driven. This general approach is becoming increasingly popular with providers, with most major companies confirming their adoption of this type of auto insurance. It is however becoming clear that usage based coverage will become even more specific and companies will be following the lead of U.S. based providers.

Man refuses to pay Guelph’s emergency services fee for out-of-towners

WSIB responds to Alec Caldwell’s post alleging a claims denial binge: “No change in the WSIB’s allowance rate”

There has been no change in the WSIB’s allowance rate. Today, workers are getting their claims approved faster than ever before. In fact, 92% of all eligibility decisions are made within 2 weeks, compared to 65% in 2008.

Report accuses WSIB of interfering with medical professionals’ opinions

(Canadian OH&S News) — A new joint report from the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) and the Ontario Network of Injured Workers’ Groups has claimed that the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), Ontario’s workers’ compensation authority, has been ignoring the recommendations of medical professionals in order to close injured workers’ cases.
