OTLA CALLS ON PROVINCIAL CANDIDATES TO RESTORE THE BASIC RIGHTS OF ACCIDENT VICTIMS

On March 4, 2014, the Ontario Liberals tabled Bill 171, which proposed a number of amendments to the Insurance Act, the Financial Services Commission of Ontario Act, the Licence Appeal Tribunal Act, the Motor Vehicle Accident Claims Act and the Repair and Storage Liens Act. At the time of tabling Bill 171, Fair Association of Victims for Accident Insurance Reform (FAIR) and the Ontario PC party criticized the bill for not dealing with claims disputes over insurers’ medical assessments

Ontario election call leaves auto changes in limbo

THE ONTARIO election call has left auto insurance reform legislation there in limbo — a turn of events that pleases critics of one of the bills while supporters are now clinging to the hope it will be revived no matter who runs Queen’s Park after the June 12 vote.

FAIR, the Association of Victims for Accident Insurance Reform, is relieved that the bill is being set aside. “This was a bill that our Liberal government was ramming through without adequate consultation or consideration for Ontario’s auto accident victims,” chair Rhona DesRoches said. “On April 30th this government allowed only two hours to consult with stakeholders on an issue that affects millions of Ontarians and represents billions of dollars in our economy.”

Horwath blasts Liberals on Ontario auto insurance; wants cuts passed on immediately

Still, the Insurance Bureau of Canada says the current system is “simply not working.”
“Too much of the money doesn’t actually go to accident victims,” the bureau says on its website.
“Instead, it pays for other costs like legal fees, fraud and assessments by for-profit medical facilities.”

New Democrat Leader Andrea Horwath accused the minority Liberal governmentof siding with the insurance companies during a campaign stop in east-end Toronto, saying insurance companies have cut payouts by billions of dollars over the past several years but motorists have seen little benefit by way of lower premiums.

Car insurance step into the election ring

Auto insurance premiums are once again taking centre stage for the Ontario elections, with the Opposition charging the Liberals are now focused on protecting the industry and not the 15 per cent chop consumer were promised.
