Auto collision lawsuit defendants’ use of video surveillance evidence without disclosure in affidavit breached civil procedure rules, Ontario appeal court rules

The Court of Appeal for Ontario has overturned an earlier decision in a lawsuit arising from an auto collision, finding that the defendants breached the province’s Rules of Civil Procedure in making a video of surveillance of the plaintiff an exhibit – and cross-examining the plaintiff on its contents – without having disclosed the existence of surveillance in an affidavit of documents.

Patients can sue hospitals for invasion of privacy, appeal court rules

The ruling upheld an earlier decision that said the province’s health privacy laws do not bar patients from seeking legal action against hospitals if their privacy is breached.

Peel Region cop convicted in car-insurance scam

Const. Carlton Watson, 50, a 23-year veteran of the force, was paid in cash by two men, including a tow truck driver and manager, to provide accident reports that passed off staged or bogus car crashes as legitimate ones, as part of a scam that bilked insurance companies out of more than $1 million, Justice John Sproat said in his ruling Friday morning in a Brampton court.

Doctors dispute could result in job action

DoctorsOntario describes itself as a grassroots, member-driven organization that protects the rights and independence of physicians, but it was not immediately clear how many doctors would follow their call to set an egg timer or stop watch and inform patients after five minutes that they are no longer being paid for their services, interim president Dr. Douglas Mark said. The doctors are not being told to cut patient visits short.
